A QLED / QNED TV is a Quantum dot-based TV, and that Quantum dot material is what makes QLED TVs different from conventional ones.
So, what is a Quantum dot?
Quantum dots are ultra-fine semiconductor materials of nanoscale size. These dots produce different colours of light depending on the particle size—the larger the size the more red the colour, and the smaller the size the more blue the colour. They are able to emit precise coloured light because particle sizes adjust at quantum-level velocities, resulting in accurate and efficient light emissions. The greater efficiency in luminance brings about tremendous changes in overall picture quality.
What's special about qleD / QNED?
QLED / QNED TVs take advantage of the many unique characteristics that Quantum dots offer such as "high luminance". Luminance refers to how bright a screen looks and that brightness is an important factor affecting other elements of image quality. First, contrast ratio is naturally improved when brightness is higher. When bright and dark representation of videos and images can be widely expressed, it's known as HDR (high dynamic range). This HDR, which is an essential component of picture quality, is enhanced further providing crisp and rich images.

So to recap.
QLED / QNED TVs are a type of LCD TV that use quantum dots to enhance colour and brightness. They leverage quantum dots, tiny semiconductor crystals that emit light of specific colours when excited, to produce a wider and more vibrant range of colours compared to traditional LED TVs. This results in a more lifelike and immersive picture quality, especially when viewing HDR content.
QLED / QNED TVs utilize a layer of quantum dots, which are microscopic nanocrystals. These dots emit different colours of light depending on their size.
Enhanced Colours:
The quantum dot layer enables QLED / QNED TVs to display a wider and more accurate colour spectrum, allowing them to reproduce a wider range of colours at various brightness levels.
Improved Brightness:
QLED / QNED TVs also offer high peak brightness, which is crucial for delivering a stunning HDR experience with vibrant details in both dark and bright scenes.
LED Backlight:
Like other LCD TVs, QLED / QNED TVs use LED backlights to illuminate the screen. The quantum dot layer sits between the backlight and the LCD panel.
Marketing Term:
The "QLED" or "QNED" acronym is more of a marketing term, as QLED / QNED TVs are fundamentally LCD TVs with the addition of a quantum dot layer.
Similar to OLED?
QLED / QNED TVs are often compared to OLED TVs, which use self-emissive pixels for perfect contrast and black levels. While QLED / QNED TVs offer high brightness and vibrant colours, OLED TVs excel in terms of contrast and black depth.
